Helping Others

Helping Others     "Ring....ring...." the bell rang, signaling dismissal time. Everyone cheered. Kate, Patricia and I always go home together. We take the same bus everyday and alight at the same bus stop as we are neighbours and classmates. Today, it was raining so we took out our umbrellas and walked briskly out of the school gate.     As we were walking towards the bus stop, we saw an old woman. She was going in the opposite direction. We had sympathy for her. She had been out collecting pieces of cardboard in the rain without an umbrella. She was trying to push her trolley as fast as she could in the rain. The old lady was old and had a hunched back. Her hair was white and her arms and legs were as thin as rakes. Our hearts ached with pain to see her in the rain.      We wanted to lend her our umbrellas, but she had already walked past us. Hence, we continued walking to the bus stop. Suddenly, Patricia turned around and ran as fast as she could! We saw her use her umbre

Being Generous

Being Generous     Every morning during assembly, we have a reading session. Everybody brings a book and sits in the school hall to read for fifteen minutes. I love reading sessions because I am a very avid reader. Although I enjoy reading all genres of stories, my favourite is humour.     One morning, I was reading a new story book when I saw my form teacher, Mrs Tan, walk over to Linda, my classmate. She had forgotten to bring a book for assembly. Mrs Tan scolded Linda loudly.      As a punishment, Linda was made to stand while everyone else continued reading. Linda looked very ashamed. She stood quietly, looking down. I looked at Linda in pity and suddenly remembered that I had another book in my bag!     I raised my hand and Mrs Tan walked over and asked me it I had a question. I told Mrs Tan that I had an extra book in my bag and asked if I could lend it to Linda. Mrs Tan agreed and praised me for my generosity.     I passed the book to Linda who smiled at me gratefully. After t

A Good Deed

A Good Deed     Alden was very anxious. He was sure that he was late for school. Alden could see a prefect waiting at the gates, ready to wright down the names of the latecomers. Alden started running faster.     Suddenly, he saw an old man attempting to make his way across a zebra crossing. He was as thin as a rake and was using a walker. Alden wondered if he should help the old man. If he did, he would be late for school!     Alden took a quick look at the old man again and saw that he was frowning and looking very worried. Alden turned around, walked briskly towards the man, and offered to help him cross the road.     "What a gallant young man you are!" the old man praised Alden. "Your mother should be very proud of having such a big-hearted son." Alden smiled, feeling exhilarated. He helped the old man cross the road. Then, he ran back to school, feeling proud that he had done a good deed. The prefect standing at the main gate saw what Alden had done and thoug

Lost!

Lost!     School had just ended for the day. Rachel was waiting at the school porch for her mother. Her stomach growled, waiting to be fed. She watched her classmates leave one by one. Though she had waited for a long time, her mother did not come. Impatient, Rachel decided to walk home by herself. She had taken the same route with Mother for months, so she thought that she knew the way home. Confidently, she picked up her bag and walked out of school.     After walking for half an hour, Rachel heard a faint meow. "What's that?" she thought. "Is it a kitten in trouble?" That's when she strayed from the usual path. She never managed to find the kitten.  When she tried to retrace her steps, she could not find her way. Fear crept into her heart as she gazed at her surroundings. Everything looked so different! Standing at a junction, Rachel was unsure of where to go next. Then, she saw a familiar-looking road to her left. Relieved, she headed that way. She tho

A Surprise Birthday Party

A Surprise Birthday Party     Amanda has three good friends. The four girls have been very good friends since they were in Primary Three. Once, Amanda walked into the classroom where her three best friends were sitting. They were talking and laughing over a notebook. When they saw Amanda, they closed the notebook and kept quiet.     Amanda felt hurt. She thought that they had been talking about her. She asked them what they were talking about but they refused to tell her. Amanda was very upset and thought that maybe her best friends were not true friends after all. True friends would keep no secrets from each other.      Later on, Amanda went home, still feeling demoralized  at being rejected by her friends. She opened the door and walked in feeling  disheartened . "Surprise!" shouted many voices. Her three best friends were waiting for her with a lighted birthday cake! Many of her other classmates and friends were also there to celebrate her birthday.     Amanda was so tou

He's So Suspicious!

He's So Suspicious!     Cliff was browsing books at the bookshop when he noticed a man walk into the bookshop. The man had a big bag. He took several wary glances around the bookstore.     Cliff's eyes furrowed. He suspected that the man had a bad motive for being in the bookshop because he was acting in a suspicious manner. Keeping a close eye on the man's movements, he discreetly scooted behind a bookshelf.  Cliff was right! The man quietly took some books off the shelves and put them into his bag. "I knew it!" Cliff thought.     Cliff stood rooted to the spot. Should I report this? What if the man comes after me? Wild thoughts ran through his head, but his righteousness soon prevailed as he saw the man briskly exiting the shop. For a moment, he felt hesitant and felt like keeping quiet, but he eventually decided to tell the bookshop owner. The man started walking briskly out of the shop. Cliff ran up to the owner and said, "That man has just stolen a few

Friends at Last!

Friends at Last!     Ruth was a bookworm. Her nose was always buried in the pages of a book. She wore big round glasses and was always teased for looking owlish. At school, Ruth did not have friends. She always spent her recesses with her books.      One day, the most popular girl at school, Joanne, approached her and asked if she could sit down. Ruth felt shocked. Why would Joanne come and talk to her? Ruth nodded and Joanne sat down, asking Ruth about the different books Ruth had read.     Ruth started telling Joanne about the stories she had read. Soon, they were laughing happily together. After that day, Joanne started spending her recess breaks with Ruth. Before long, they became the best of friends. They even studied together. Joanne was keen on doing well for the upcoming exams, so Ruth, a scholarly girl, helped coach her.     On the day of the examinations, Joanne was nervous. They wished each other good luck and Ruth assured Joanne that she would surely do well, considering

Selene’s First Time Going by Herself Up the Hill

Selene's First Time Going by Herself Up the Hill      The sun shone like a golden nugget in the sky. Selene and her family were at home ,  and she was feeling lonely. Suddenly, a wail of pain sounded from Selene’s father’s room. It turned out that her father had fallen ill. However, their family was poor and could not afford a doctor, so they got their medicine from the hill just beside their house. Since Selene’s mother was busy working, she asked Selene to climb up the hill to harvest some medicinal herbs (such as river mint, ginseng, etc.). She had already taught Selene about the various plants that were required to soothe each ailment, so Selene could make the trip by herself. “Selene, go get medicine for your father! He is running a high fever,” Selene’s mother called, after checking on and figuring out what was wrong with her father. Selene groaned inwardly. She was playing her favourite game and was winning. However, she knew that she was the only person who was free and her
