Lost!

 Lost!

School had just ended for the day. Rachel was waiting at the school porch for her mother. Her stomach growled, waiting to be fed. She watched her classmates leave one by one. Though she had waited for a long time, her mother did not come. Impatient, Rachel decided to walk home by herself. She had taken the same route with Mother for months, so she thought that she knew the way home. Confidently, she picked up her bag and walked out of school.

After walking for half an hour, Rachel heard a faint meow. "What's that?" she thought. "Is it a kitten in trouble?" That's when she strayed from the usual path. She never managed to find the kitten.  When she tried to retrace her steps, she could not find her way. Fear crept into her heart as she gazed at her surroundings. Everything looked so different! Standing at a junction, Rachel was unsure of where to go next. Then, she saw a familiar-looking road to her left. Relieved, she headed that way. She thought that she spotted her house! Rachel felt exhilarated. However, by the time she reached the lobby, she soon found out that the block number was not hers. Exhausted, Rachel sat down in front of the main door. Tears sprang into her eyes as she wondered if she would ever see her mother again.

Terrified, she yearned to be home with her mother. Her heart was beating wildly in her chest, and Rachel started to cry. Just then, the owner of the house, a woman, returned. She was alarmed to see a little girl in tears at her doorstep. Filled with concern, she sat down beside her and asked if she was alright. In between sobs, Rachel explained that she was lost. The kind lady passed Rachel a mobile phone and asked her to call her mother. "Hello mummy, I am lost. I decided to come home myself because you took too long to come and pick me up. On the way, I heard a cat purring and decided to take a look, then I got lost. Can you pick me up?"

Rachel's furious mother soon came to pick her up. She had been waiting at the school gates for the last half hour, worried sick. She scolded Rachel for leaving the school compound by herself. "In the future, do not be impatient again!"
